Worship: Delight in God

"Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!
For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods." (Psalm 96:1-4, ESV)

"Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desire of your heart." (Psalm 37:4, ESV)

Thank you for your interest in the Worship Ministry of Harvard Avenue Baptist Church. We believe that living a life of worship is the primary purpose of a believer in Christ. Therefore, we treat God’s requirement to worship Him as the complete passion and desire of our hearts. The goal of the Worship Ministry is to raise up genuine worshipers of the Triune God. Secondly, we want to identify, train, and equip musicians who will humbly and skillfully serve God’s purposes for and through the church. One of the biblical truths that drives us is the great news that "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him" (John Piper). As worshipers we must delight in our God!

Each time we meet to worship the triune God, He alone should be the all-consuming center of our attention and affections. His greatness and splendor should become bigger in our minds, hearts, and wills. His desires and commands should become more precious to us. Jesus Christ and His atoning work should become more glorious and amazing to us as we gather and are reminded of His redemption.

We were created worshiping, and Scripture instructs us to direct our affections to God. This is the final end of all existence: the worship of God. God created the universe so that it would display the worth of His glory. And He created us so that we would see this glory and reflect it by knowing and loving it – with all our heart and soul and mind and strength.

We are committed to developing a fellowship of believers that are hungry to meet God in a corporate setting where the Word of God is proclaimed and biblical principles of worshiping together are realized. We want to have a broad, world vision in our worship practice, and we rejoice to see the amazing variety of musical expressions with which God has blessed His church, both in the past and in the present. Our vision is to create a tapestry of blended worship by weaving these elements in a way that enables us to unite in worship through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“Christian worship is the response of God’s redeemed people to His self-revelation that exalts God’s glory in Christ in our minds, affections, and wills, in the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Bob Kauflin)

God-glorifying – God alone deserves our worship and we will strive to experience God in such a way that he is glorified in our affections.
Word-driven – We value the priority of Scripture in our services, as the content of our singing, praying, and proclamation will be based upon the Word of God.
Christ-centered – We will focus on God’s redemptive plan of salvation through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Spirit-empowered – We will depend on the Spirit’s work of illuminating truth and stirring our affections towards Christ.
Community – We are a body of faith, worshiping corporately, and we value the encouragement and edification of the local church. We recognize the significance and importance of congregational singing.
Diversity – We desire to reflect the diversity of God and His infinite worth in our expressions of worship, acknowledging the importance of various musical styles and texts.
Excellence – We want to present the truths of God in our songs, prayers, and preaching in such a way that people’s attention will not be diverted from the substance, so that we present the gospel with clarity and distinction.
Authenticity – We seek to be authentic worshipers in our corporate gatherings, an extension of the spiritual fruit and maturity in our personal lives, marked by an atmosphere that promotes a genuine encounter with God.
